What

The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) Military Expenditure Database (Milex) compiles consistent time series of military spending for most countries, with documentation, fact sheets (e.g. trends in world military expenditure), and research pages. Public entry points: the Milex database page, the annual fact sheet PDF, and SIPRI press notes on global totals.

Why on this shelf

Spending is a resource / militarisation layer. It is not “who fought where” (ACLED) and not “who died in battle” (UCDP). Together with GPI’s militarisation domain and HIIK intensity, it rounds the shelf without a second death map.

How to read it

Figures are SIPRI estimates under their definitions (often constant prices / share of GDP depending on the view). High spend ≠ “aggressor” and low spend ≠ “peaceful.” Some countries are opaque; SIPRI marks uncertainty.

Caveats

Not this card: arms-transfer ledgers, nuclear stockpiles, or equipment inventories: those are other SIPRI products. The interactive host milex.sipri.org did not respond to automated GET (timeout / no HTTP code). Primary cite is sipri.org/databases/milex and the fact sheet (both 200).
