What

The Global Peace Index (GPI), published by the Institute for Economics & Peace (IEP) via Vision of Humanity, ranks countries on peacefulness using a composite of indicators across ongoing domestic and international conflict, societal safety and security, and militarisation. The interactive map and annual report (latest public report checked: GPI 2026) are the public front door.

Why on this shelf

Live ACLED answers “where were events recorded?” Live UCDP/OWID answers “how many battle-related deaths?” GPI answers a different question: how peaceful is this country on a comparable composite score? It complements casualties and events without duplicating either.

How to read it

A colour on the map is a rank/score band, not a court finding and not “this side started the war.” Domain weights and year matter, open the latest GPI report for methods. Dense red on GPI is not the same object as dense ACLED pins.

Caveats

Not this card: ACLED event points; UCDP battle-death tallies; Fragile States Index (separate card). Do not paste proprietary GPI artwork.
