Tree-cover loss
Hansen / Global Forest Watch: where tree cover was lost, including clearing, fire, and harvest: not only “deforestation.”

Map: Fix Planet from Global Mangrove Watch version 3, 2020 extent. Colour is the share of about 25 m pixels classed as mangrove, counted on a 0.02° grid. CC BY 4.0. Boundaries: Natural Earth.
The map is Global Mangrove Watch version 3 extent for 2020: the share of mangrove pixels on a 0.02° grid (Bunting et al., CC BY 4.0). Later versions, including the v4.1 annual series from 1985 through 2025, are published by JAXA and on Zenodo. This plate is the 2020 v3 extent, not that later time series. The public platform shows habitat extent, net change, and alerts.
Darker green is a higher share of mangrove pixels in 2020. It is tidal forest in the GMW classifier, not a coral reef, not a salt marsh, and not a protected area. Do not mix this extent with Hansen tree-cover totals.
Mangrove maps struggle at muddy edges, aquaculture ponds, and sparse fringes. Annual change is not the same as legal deforestation. Carbon and species layers are separate products on the same platform. Accuracy varies by country and turbidity. Restoration plantings may lag in the classifier. Treat alerts as screening, then check local imagery.
The map is Global Mangrove Watch version 3, 2020 extent (CC BY 4.0; Bunting et al.). Later GMW versions exist; this plate is v3 for 2020. Open globalmangrovewatch.org for the living platform.
