What it is

The broad faced potoroo (Potorous platyops) was a small hopping marsupial, about 30 centimetres long without its tail, with a short, wide face. The International Union for Conservation of Nature lists it as Extinct.

Range

Coastal districts of south western Australia.

What happened

Collectors took only a few animals in the 1840s and the 1870s, and almost nothing is known of how it lived. Writers soon after its loss linked its decline to changed fire patterns and to cats brought by settlers.

When / status

Last caught alive in 1875.

Human role

Changed bushfire patterns and introduced cats are linked to its decline.
