What happened

The French traveller François Leguat described it in the 1690s, including how the birds defended their territory with knobs on their wings. Settlers and sailors ate it, and introduced cats and pigs took eggs and chicks.

When / status

Human role

Hunting by people and by animals they brought to the island wiped it out.
