What it is

The Philippine, or Palawan, pangolin is a separate species confined to the Palawan faunal region. IUCN listed it as Critically Endangered in 2019 (up from Endangered). Density estimates are local and old; there is no island-wide census. Free photographs of living animals are scarce on public archives, which is why this card uses a 2015 Philippine stamp.

Range

Palawan and associated islands (including Culion and Dumaran). Nowhere else.

What happened

Local hunting for meat and scales, plus export into the same East Asian trade that emptied Chinese and Sunda forests, hit a species that never had a continent to hide in. Habitat conversion on Palawan adds pressure.

When / status

Critically Endangered now.

Human role

Hunting and trade on a small island range.
