What it is

Palaeopropithecus ingens was a large lemur of Madagascar, weighing several tens of kilograms, that moved slowly and hung below branches by long arms and hooked hands and feet. The International Union for Conservation of Nature lists it as Extinct.

Range

Forests of south western Madagascar.

What happened

People reached Madagascar about two thousand years ago. Bones of this lemur with butchery marks show it was hunted and eaten, and its slow movement, daytime habits and slow breeding made it an easy target.

When / status

Possibly as recent as about four hundred years ago.

Human role

Hunting by people, helped by its slow movement and slow breeding, is blamed for its extinction.
