What it is

The Mauritius blue pigeon (Alectroenas nitidissimus) was a stout pigeon about 30 centimetres long, dark blue with a silvery white head and neck and a red tail and face. The International Union for Conservation of Nature lists it as Extinct.

Range

Forests of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean.

What happened

Settlers found it tame and good to eat. During French rule the lowland forests were almost all cut down, and macaques brought to the island raided the forest birds.

When / status

Last specimen shot in 1826; probably gone by the 1830s.

Human role

Forest clearing, hunting and introduced macaques drove it to extinction.
