What it is

The Indian pangolin is a large, mostly terrestrial pangolin of the Indian subcontinent. IUCN listed it as Endangered in 2019, a step below the three other Asian species (all CR). There is still no credible range-wide count. As Chinese and Sunda stocks fell, seizures of Indian pangolins rose: a classic sequential-exploitation pattern.

Range

India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka, in forest, scrub, and even near farmland.

What happened

Domestic use and export of scales drive the decline. The species is more widespread than the Palawan endemic, which is why IUCN has not (yet) given it CR. That is not safety.

When / status

Endangered now. The Asian CR set is Chinese, Sunda, and Philippine; this is the remaining Asian species on the next rung.

Human role

Trade in scales and meat, following the collapse of more easterly species.
