What it is
The horse (Equus ferus caballus) is the domestic horse people ride, drive, and keep. Work on ancient genetic material by Librado and colleagues (Nature, 2021) places the rise and spread of the modern domestic lineage on the Western Eurasian steppes, expanding around 2200-2000 BC. Horses from Botai in Kazakhstan belong to another lineage.
Range
Kept worldwide. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations maps horses as livestock. Working, sport, and feral herds live on every inhabited continent.
What happened
The modern domestic lineage replaced earlier lineages as it spread with people. That date is a genetic result from a 2021 study. Working, sport, and feral herds descend from that kept lineage.
When / status
A living domesticate. Modern lineage: Western Eurasian steppes, around 2200-2000 BC (Librado and colleagues, 2021).
Human role
We bred and moved them as transport and work. The date of the living lineage comes from a 2021 genetic study.
