What it is

Grévy's zebra (Equus grevyi) is the largest living zebra and the largest wild member of the horse family. Its stripes are narrow and close together, its belly is white and its ears are large and rounded. The International Union for Conservation of Nature lists it as Endangered.

Range

Dry grasslands and bush of northern Kenya and southern Ethiopia.

What happened

Unlike other zebras, it does not live in fixed family groups. Males guard territories around water and grazing, and mares with foals move between them.

When / status

Endangered now, with far fewer left than in the past.

Human role

Loss of grazing and water to livestock, droughts and past hunting for its skin threaten it.
