What it is

The Cuban macaw (Ara tricolor) was one of the smallest macaws, with a red head, orange underside and blue wings. It lived on Cuba and the Isle of Youth. The International Union for Conservation of Nature lists it as Extinct.

Range

Cuba and the Isle of Youth, especially swampy lowlands such as the Zapata Swamp.

What happened

It was hunted and traded by Native Americans and later by Europeans. Hunting for food and the pet trade, together with forest clearing, made it rare by the middle of the nineteenth century.

When / status

Last reliable records in the 1850s on Cuba and 1864 on the Isle of Youth.

Human role

Hunting, the bird trade and destruction of its forests drove it to extinction.
