What it is

The Atitlán grebe (Podilymbus gigas) was a large diving bird with very short wings, found only on Lake Atitlán. Local people called it the poc. The International Union for Conservation of Nature lists it as Extinct.

Range

Lake Atitlán, in the highlands of Guatemala.

What happened

Black bass were released into the lake for sport fishing in 1958 and 1960. They ate the young grebes and the crabs and fish the birds lived on, while reed cutting, building on the shore and an earthquake that lowered the lake took the rest.

When / status

The last two birds were seen in 1989.

Human role

Fish introduced for angling, reed cutting and shore development drove it to extinction.
