What it is

The Alaotra grebe (Tachybaptus rufolavatus) was a small grebe with short wings that rarely flew far. It lived almost only on Lake Alaotra. The International Union for Conservation of Nature lists it as Extinct.

Range

Lake Alaotra and nearby lakes in central eastern Madagascar.

What happened

Farming and rice fields took over the marshes around the lake. Nylon gill nets drowned diving birds, and a predatory fish released into the lake ate them, while the common little grebe that moved in bred with the last survivors.

When / status

Last confirmed sighting in 1985; declared extinct in 2010.

Human role

Destruction of its marshes, fishing nets and an introduced fish drove it to extinction.
