Glacial climate intervention
Slow ice-sheet collapse with seabed curtains, basal-water tricks, or winter ice thickening: on paper. A 2024 research vision asks whether any of it can work. Nothing here is a built sea wall for Antarctica.
Jurisdiction: Research vision (glaciology / polar engineering proposals; no deployed ice-sheet programme)
Years / status: Glacial Climate Intervention research vision (MacAyeal, Moore, Mankoff, Wolovick, Minchew et al., 2024); surveyed among high-latitude interventions in Climatic Change (2024). Status: research / speculative.
The plan
A family of proposals to reduce sea-level contribution from ice sheets and to slow Arctic sea-ice loss by local engineering rather than by dimming the sun. Ideas include seabed curtains or berms to block warm water from ice-shelf cavities, basal-hydrology interventions, and pumping seawater onto ice in winter to thicken it. The 2024 Glacial Climate Intervention: A Research Vision paper argues for a decade of research and transparent consultation: not for immediate construction.
Construction / status
White papers, models, and early engineering concepts. A 2024 Climatic Change survey graded dozens of high-latitude “emergency” interventions and found many ocean/ice ideas score poorly on readiness and risk knowledge. No government has an operational glacial-intervention programme that demonstrably holds an ice sheet.
What went wrong, or only partly worked
Documented: modelling that modest cavity barriers could slow melt in specific geometries; small-scale ice-thickening practice for winter roads is not the same as basin-scale Arctic pumps. There is no field proof that curtains or pumps stabilise Thwaites-class glaciers at climate-policy scale.
Lessons
Polar ecosystems, Indigenous rights, logistics, and failure modes are first-order: not footnotes. Glass-bead or albedo “fixes” for sea ice have published counter-results. Emissions cuts remain the primary lever; this card is research honesty, not a Plan B sticker.
