Official name: Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals
Citation: Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals; done at Bonn 23 June 1979; entered into force 1 November 1983
Year / status: Done at Bonn, 23 June 1979. Entered into force 1 November 1983. Depositary: Federal Republic of Germany.
What it does
A framework convention under UNEP for migratory wild animals. Range States of Appendix I species must work to protect and restore key habitats, reduce migration barriers, and generally prohibit taking (with narrow exceptions). For Appendix II, Parties are to conclude AGREEMENTS or MoUs that cover whole ranges. The Conference of the Parties and a Scientific Council steer listings and guidance.
Where it applies / status
Applies to Parties that have ratified or acceded. Signed in Bonn (23 June 1979); in force from 1 November 1983. Depositary: Federal Republic of Germany. Party and Range-State lists are published on cms.int.
Documented benefits or intended effects
Intended effects: coordinate conservation along entire flyways and swimways; seed daughter Agreements (e.g. AEWA, EUROBATS and other CMS Family instruments). Outcomes depend on Party measures and Agreement strength: the Convention text alone does not fence a corridor.
Caveats
Not a wildlife-trade permit system (that is CITES). Not the EU Birds or Habitats Directives. Not the U.S. ESA. Appendix lists change by decision of the Conference of the Parties. The current Appendices are published on cms.int.
